May 24 – Mary, Help of Christians: Protection and comfort in difficult times

On May 24, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians —a title steeped in a long tradition. This feast day was introduced in 1815 by Pope Pius VII in particular, in thanksgiving for his liberation from Napoleon's captivity. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is considered by this name to be a special intercessor in times of distress, a comforter, and a powerful helper in difficult situations.

The veneration of Mary as "Auxiliatrix" is deeply rooted, especially in South Tyrol, Italy, and the German-speaking world—as is the case among the Salesians of Don Bosco, for whom she is the patroness of the order. Many churches and chapels are dedicated to her, and numerous believers seek strength and confidence in her representation.
