May 25 – St. Bede the Venerable: Learned monk and doctor of the Church
On May 25, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Bede the Venerable , one of the most important scholars of the early Middle Ages. Born in 673 in Northumbria (present-day England), Bede entered the monastery of Jarrow as a child, where he devoted his life to study, prayer, and writing.
His most famous work is The Ecclesiastical History of the English People , which made him the "Father of English Historiography." Pope Leo XIII elevated him to Doctor of the Church in 1899—the only Englishman to receive this title. Bede is considered the patron saint of biblical scholars, historians, and teachers.
