June 28: Feast of St. Irenaeus of Lyon

On June 28, the Church commemorates Saint Irenaeus of Lyon – one of the most important Church Fathers of the 2nd century. As Bishop of Lyon and one of the first great theologians of the West, he played a key role in formulating Christian doctrine.

Born presumably around 135 in Asia Minor, Irenaeus combined the spiritual heritage of the Eastern Church with developing Latin theology. His work Adversus Haereses is particularly well-known; in it he vigorously opposed Gnostic heresies and emphasized the unity of the Church. Irenaeus was a bridge-builder between cultures and traditions and a pioneer of ecumenism.

Symbolism & representation:
Irenaeus is often depicted as a bishop, holding a book or scroll, the symbols of his theological writings and his role as a teacher of the Church.
