June 3 – St. Charles Lwanga and companions: Courageous witnesses in Africa

On June 3, the Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs of Uganda , especially St. Charles Lwanga and his companions. These young Christians were brutally persecuted and murdered for their faith between 1885 and 1887, during the reign of King Mwanga II in the then Kingdom of Buganda. Karl Lwanga, a young catechist and head of the royal pages, baptized several companions the night before his death. His courage and steadfastness impressed even his opponents. In 1964, he and 21 other companions were canonized by Pope Paul VI—the first saints from sub-Saharan Africa.

They are considered patrons of African youth and stand for strength of faith and loyalty under persecution.
