June 7 – St. Robert of Newminster: Monk with a Shepherd’s Heart
On June 7, the Church honors St. Robert of Newminster , a pious abbot of the 12th century who is venerated for his kindness, discipline, and spiritual depth. Born around 1100 in Gargrave, Yorkshire, he entered a monastery at an early age and later joined the reforming Cistercian order.
In 1138, Robert was appointed the first abbot of the newly founded Newminster monastery. His life was characterized by simplicity, prayer, and service to the poor. Contemporary witnesses report his special ability to combine pastoral care with monastic discipline. Many people sought him out for advice and spiritual guidance.
He is considered the patron saint of shepherds and herdsmen , and a model for a humble, serving life.
